One of the most frustrating things about networking is figuring out how to do it when you’re just not in the mood. You’ve had a bad day or a whirlwind week, or you’re feeling any kind of down on yourself—lost, confused, conflicted, unsure, nervous, anxious, depressed. In those moments, the last thing I want to do is show up to that networking happy hour and schmooze, or, worse, make it to that one-on-one coffee catch up.
Sometimes those negative feelings are tied to a specific business or career result—you lost out on a project to a competitor or you didn't land that job you'd been interviewing for. Sometimes the source is less tangible—not enough sleep, turbulent times of year, troubles in your personal life seeping into your professional life. For as long as I have been working, I have been repulsed by the kind of networking that demands a scoreboard. What can you do for me and what can I do for you and then we go our separate ways. Maybe if I do a favor for that person, that person will help me with this business I've been working on. Or the other way around. It feels manipulative because it is manipulative.
But even though the concept itself wasn't new, the founder's presentation on being giving clicked for me in a way it never had before. It could have been because I was still under the spell of that new year, new me magic, or maybe my first vacation in five years at the beginning of January really did rewire my brain. Whatever the instigating reason, I've been able to spend 2018 so far approaching my business in an entirely new way.
